Burns' Punch Bowl
BURNS' PUNCH BOWL. Scottish, Strathspey. E Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Nathaniel Gow (1763-1831). The Burns Punch Bowl held whiskey-toddy and is a relic of the famed Scots poet. There is a Burns Punch Bowl in the British Museum, donated in the 19th century by Mr. Hastie, an M.P. for Paisley. Nathaniel Gow is said to have received a set of Oswald's Caledonian Pocket Companion, with notes in Robert Burns' handwriting, from the poet himself. "This volume is said to have been annually produced with the celebrated 'Burns Punch Bowl' at the annual meeting held by the Poet's friends on the anniversary of his Birth day" (as stated in a bill date June 25, 1858, of "Superior Second-Hand Books" to be sold by Willis and Price at their shop at the Strand).
