Countess of Eglinton's Delight
COUNTESS OF EGLINTON'S DELIGHT. Scottish, Jig. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Niel Gow (1727-1807). The Gow's dedicated their Fourth Collection (1800) to the Earl of Eglinton. His Countess was Eleanora Hamilton (1743-1817), daughter of Robert Hamilton of Bourtree Hill, Ayr, and Anne Cunningham. She married her cousin, the 12th Earl of Eglinton, Hugh Montgomerie, in 1772, and seems to have been content to stay out of the limelight and raise her family. A portrait of her, seated playing the harp, was painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1777.
