CROSS IN THE WOOD, THE. Irish, Reel. E Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by County Limerick/Bronx, N.Y., fiddler Martin Mulvihill (1927-1987). Born in Ballygoughin in the western part of the county to a musical family (his mother played the concertina and violin), Mulvihill emigrated first to England, then, in 1971 to America, where he settled in the Bronx and established himself as the premier teacher of Irish traditional music to the children of the émigré community. In 1984 he was named an NEA National Heritage Fellow.
