TENT AND BRANDY. English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Tent was a deep red Spanish wine. The mixture of tent and brandy was called ‘Coke Upon Littleton’ in 18th century slang usage, which itself is derived from the lawyers’ name for the translation and reprint of Littleton’s 1465 book Tenures, with commentary by Sir Edward Coke. The melody was first published in John Johnson’s Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 6 (London, 1751). It was also entered into the 1790 music manuscript copybook of London musician Thomas Hammersley.
