DANIEL COWPER. English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Walsh): AABB (Playford). The melody and dance instructions ("Longways for as many as will") were first published in Henry Playford's Dancing Master, 9th edition (1695). It was retained in the long-running Dancing Master series of editions through the 18th and final edition of 1728 (published by John Young, heir to the Playford music publishing concerns). The dance and tune were also printed in various publications by the Walshes, beginning with The Compleat Country Dancing Master (London, 1718).

The tune was employed in the ballad opera Critic Upon Critic (1792) for Leonard MacNally's song "The lawyers, doctors, belles and beaus."
