ROSS MEOR. English, Country Dance (whole or cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A country dance tune and dance directions printed by several London publishers in first half of the 18th century. The tune has a Scottish-sounding title, but has not been traced to that country, and the melody has no hint of Scottish character. The 18th century directions to publisher John Johnson's "Ross Meor" have been adopted into modern Scottish Country Dance repertory where it is a popular dance. Other tunes have since been played for the dance, including strathspeys.
