ROUND THE BUTTON AND THROUGH THE HORN [1]. American, Quadrille (6/8 time). USA, southwestern Pa. A Major (1st strain) & E Major (2nd strain). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB. Penn State professor Samuel Bayard, who collected in rural western Pennsylvania, was much more impressed the the name of this quadrille tune (and its companion, "Round the Button and through the Horn (2)") than he was with its musicality, which he opined was "of an exceedingly common sort--that is, comparatively undistinguished, and full of much-used melodic formulas." He assumed the similar last two bars of the first strains of the tunes confused his source into calling them by the rather unique name, and concluded that the original name of one of the tunes was forever lost.
