4th OF JULY. Scottish, March (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "4th of July" is a march composed by Edinburgh fiddler-composer and bandleader Robert Mackintosh (c. 1745-1808), who included it in his Fourth Collection of New Strathspey Reels (c. 1804). It is located in that volume on a couple of pages devoted to marches that includes "Yankie Doodle" (p. 37), so there seems little doubt that the march was named for the American holiday.
