BAPTIST JOHNSON. AKA - "Planxty Johnston." Irish, Slow Air or Planxty (6/8 time). C Major (Bunting, O'Sullivan): D Major (Ó Canainn). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). Edward Bunting noted the air from harper Charles Byrne and included it in his General Collection of Ancient Music of Ireland (1796). O'Sullivan (1958) finds that Baptist Johnston was High Sheriff of County Monaghan in 1728 and M.P. from Monaghan from 1747-1753, and lived in Tully.
