BELL DANCE IN ALLADIN [sic]. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The "much admired" Bell-Dance was performed by Mrs. Parker in Charles Farley's pantomime Aladdin; or, The Wonderful Lamp (1813), staged at Covent Garden. The tune was arranged for the pianoforte by W.H. Ware and published around 1814. A one-sentence review in the Gentleman's Magazine that year sniffed, "This is an allegretto with variations, not very difficult nor very original, but in a familiar style, agreeable to such as receive more pleasure from rhythm than melody, such as do not yet fully comprehend the musical expression of sentiment."
