BELLINGHAM BOAT, THE. English, Jig (6/8 time). England, Northumberland. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Callaghan): AABB' (Raven). The tune has been attributed by the Pipers' Society Tune Book and the High Level Ranters (sleeve notes on "Northumberland For Ever") to Robert Whinham (1814-1893), a musician, teacher, composer, dancing master and fiddler originally from Morpeth, Northumberland. Dixon (1995) could find no corroborating evidence, however. Bellingham (pronounced 'Bellinjum'), says Dixon, is primary town on the North Tyne, west Northumberland. The melody is also in the mid-19th century music manuscript copybook of William Hall Lister (East Boldon, near Newcastle), where it appears simply as "Quadrille."
