BEWARE OF THE RIPPLES. AKA and see "Logie of Buchan (1)," "Rippels (The)," "Tak tent to the rippells gudeman," "Taylor's March (4) (The)." Scottish, Slow Air (whole time). D Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDDEEFFGGHIIJJ. According to the glossary in Cunningham's The Works of Robert Burns (1844, p. 789), Ripples are "Pains in the back and loins, sounds which usher death." An air and companion jig with variations are from James Oswald's [1] (1710-1769) Caledonian Pocket Companion, Book 11 (1760). This is an older air to which cellist and composer James Oswald composed variation sets. His jig setting was previously published as "Rippels (The)" by London publisher John Walsh in 24 Country Dances for the Year 1736,. Still earlier, "Tak tent to the rippells gudeman" is a 3/4 time precursor that was entered into Northumbrian musician Henry Atkinson's 1694 music manuscript collection.

Glasgow musician James Aird published a version of Oswald's tune as "Taylor's March (4) (The)," which Stenhouse says was "generally played at the annual meetings for choosing the deacons and other office-bearers of the (corporation of Tailors) Society." See note for "annotation:Logie of Buchan (1)" for further discussion of tune and song.
