BLACK HOE, THE. See "Castlebar Jig (The)," "Castlelan Races," "Mist on the Meadow (1) (The)," "Morrison's Fancy," "Rakes of Castlebar (1) (The)," "Thrush in the Strand (The), "Thrush in the Straw (1) (The)." Canadian, Jig (6/8 time). Canada; Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Cape Breton. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title on Cape Breton/PEI islands for this popular tune of Irish provenance is "The Black Hoe." The alternate title "Morrison's Fancy" is found in O'Neill's Waifs and Strays of Gaelic Melody and predates James Morrison's recording of the tune under the title "Castlebar Races." County Leitrim flute player John McKenna also recorded the tune in the 78 RPM era under the title "Mist on the Meadow (1) (The)."
