BUCKLEY'S HORNPIPE. AKA and see "Sylvanus Hornpipe." American, Hornpipe (2/4 time). E Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Buckley's Hornpipe" is a difficult composition requiring position playing on the fiddle in the second strain. The hornpipe has been credited to J. Red Buckley, according to William Bradbury Ryan in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883), and to Fred Buckley (of the Original Buckley Serenaders) according to the later White's collection. However, the earliest publication that includes the melody, Howe's 1000 Jigs and Reels (c. 1867), does not give composer credits at all, nor does George H. Coes' Coes Album of Jigs and Reels (1876).

Fr. John Quinn finds the same tune in Laybourn's Kohler's Violin Repository (1881-1885) under the title "Sylvanus Hornpipe." See also "Buckley's Favorite Jig," presumably by the same family of composers.
