BURFORD RACES. English, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in Thompson's Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1767, and Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 3 (London, c. 1773), and in James Gillespie Manuscript (1768, Perth). It also appears in the music manuscript copybook of Henry Beck (1786). The Burford Races, Oxfordshire, were one of England's earliest major horse races, established by the 'Merry Monarch', Charles II.
