The tune is contained in the large mid-19th century music manuscript collection of County Cork cleric and uilleann piper Canon biography:James Goodman. The first strain of "Cailleac an dilisg" is cognate with the second strain of "Duncan’s Dance, published in the mid-18th century by James Oswald.
