CHÉAD MHAIRT DEN FHOMHAR, AN (The First Tuesday of Autumn). AKA and see "The First Tuesday in Autumn." Irish, Air. The song, by Seamus O Domhnaill, laments the death of his son Paidi, who was drowned in 1811 off the Donegal coast at Gweedore. The boy had been bringing home in a boat some fermented malt with which to make the spirit poitin. According to O' Canainn (1978), this is one of the great songs in northern Irish tradition.
