CHELTENHAM WALTZ (1) (THE). AKA and see "Frejus Waltz," "Prussian Waltz (3)," "Swiss Waltz (6)." English, Waltz (3/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. "Cheltenham Waltz [1]" was entered in the 1829-32 music manuscript collection of East Yorkshire musician C.J. Fox. Under the title "Swiss Waltz" the same tune can be found in both the mid-19th century music manuscript of William Winter, a shoemaker and violin player who lived in West Bagborough in Somerset, southwest England, and in the 1823 music manuscript of Shropshire musician R. Hughes. The waltz was entered into the anonymous 1826-1858 music manuscript collection (probably from the state of Maine) entitled Melodist: A Collection of music in two volumes[1] (No. 16, p. 11) under the title "Prussian Waltz (3)."
