CHIRPING OF THE NIGHTINGALE. English, Country Dance (6/4 or 6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. This country dance ("Round for as many as will") and tune was printed in the first edition of John Playford's English Dancing Master [1] (London, 1651, p. 62), and was retained in subsequent editions of the long-running Dancing Master series through the 8th edition of 1690, after which it was dropped. It is a companion tune, of sorts, to his "Chirping of the Lark (The)," the tune just prior to "Chirping of the Nighingale" in the Dancing Master.
