Composed by Kirkmichael, Perthshire, teacher, fiddler and composer biography:Robert Petrie (1767-1830). He included it in his Second Collection of Strathspey Reels and Country Dances (1796, p. 15), one of several tunes named in honor of the Garden family. The whole volume is dedicated to the spouse of Petrie's patron and employer, Mrs. Garden of Troup[1]. Mrs. Garden was born Penelope Smyth, originally from Ballinatray, Ireland, who wed in 1791.
The title of Petrie's strathspey refers to Francis Garden-Campbell (1768-1815) of Troup and Glenlyon, who inherited considerable estates in Scotland in 1793 when his father's brother died, leaving no issue. Francis purchased a commission in the Army, Captain of the 53rd Regiment of Foot, although his martial exploits were chiefly the erection of a battery called Fort-Fiddes on the headland Coulie Cann of Castlehill, near Troup House in 1803 during the During the Napoleonic War. Its range covered the Bays of Troup and Auchmeden, and gave protection to vessels against privateers and French ships. His birthday was on October 4th.
