COL. GARDINER'S LAMENT. Scottish, English; Air (3/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title honors Colonel James Gardiner [1] (1688-1745), a Scottish soldier who fought in the British army. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Prestonpans while attempting to rally his troops in the face of the Highlanders advance, and died soon afterward. By a quirk of fate Gardiner lived close to the battlefield in Bankton House.
