COLUMBIAN SETT FIGURE 1. American (?), English (?); Quadrille or Reel (2/4 or cut time). F Major (Howe): G Major (Clarke). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Boston music publisher Elias Howe published the three-part version of the tune as part of a quadrille set in his large compendium Second Part of the Musician's Companion (1843), set in 2/4 time. A less elaborate, untitled two-part version in cut time (corresponding to Howe's first two parts) was entered into the music manuscript collection of musician William Clarke of Feltwell, Norwalk, East Anglia, who was active approximately the same time as Howe's publication. This suggests the tune was in circulation in the early 19th century, perhaps with an English provenance.
