John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Ayrshire fiddler-composer biography:John Riddell's 1782 second collection (p. 52), printed in Glasgow by James Aird. The Countess of Dumfries at the time of Riddell's second collection was Margaret Crauford, who married Patrick McDouall-Crichton (1726-1803) in September, 1771.
