COUNTESS OF SELKIRK'S FAVORITE. Scottish, Strathspey. C Aeolian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Scottish bandleader, music publisher, fiddler and composer Nathaniel Gow (1763-1831), printed in A Fifth Collection of Strathspeys Reels (Edinburgh, 1809). Thomas Douglas, the 5th Earl of Selkirk, married in 1807 Jean Colvile (d. 10.06.1871), daughter of James Wedderburn Colvile of Ochiltree. Douglas's solution to the poverty brought about by the Highland Clearances was to fund new settlements in North America, on Prince Edwards Island and the Red River Settlement.
