CULTIVATEUR, LE (The Farmer). AKA - "Reel du cultivateur." AKA and see "Constitution Hornpipe (1)," "Farmer's Reel (3)," "Flat Boat," "Jinrikisha," "Lone Appendicitis," "Père Allard (Le)," "Reel de la traverse," "[Reel de la traverse]]," "Reel Montmorency." French-Canadian, Reel. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Reel du cultivateur", a version of "Constitution Hornpipe (1)," was recorded by fiddler Joseph Allard (1873-1947) in 1929. Allard was born either in Châteauguay, Province de Québec, or in Maine, to French-Canadian parents. His family returned to Canada when Allard was quite young, but at age 16 he returned to the United States to live for some 20 years before he eventually settled in Québec. While he recorded some 75 sides, he was not a professional musician (although semi-professional when he was younger) but rather worked as a fisherman. Allard re-recorded the tune in 1941, albeit released under the title "Reel de la traverse."
The reel (also with the title "Reel du cultivateur") was recorded shortly after Allard by Montreal fiddler J.O. LaMadeleine, although the latter set it in the key of 'D', the more common key for the tune in modern times.
A version of the reel was recorded as "Reel Montmorency" by accordion player Joseph Guilmette (1886-1950) for Victor Records in 1931.
