CUP OF FAITH. AKA - "Fidel Martin's Rakish Paddy." AKA and see "Rakish Paddy." American, Reel (cut time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BC. "Cup of Faith" is the name fiddler Fidel Martin (1891-1976) gave to his adaptation of the Irish reel "Rakish Paddy." Martin was originally from Rogersville, New Brunswick, where he learned to fiddle in his Francophone family. As a young man he moved to Maine and then to Berlin, N.H., where he worked in the paper mills and as a truck driver for the city. His repertoire was large and varied and included tunes from Canada, the United States, Ireland and Scotland. Martin was friends with the musical Riendeau family of Berlin and Gerry Gobichaud, also New Brunswick expats, and exchanged repertoire with them and other regional fiddlers in a melting pot of style and source.
