DANDLING THE IRISH BEARNS. AKA - "Dangling of the Irish Bearns (The)." Irish, Air or Lullaby (3/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One Part. A dandling melody (not the mildly distressing 'dangling' of Burk Thumoth's title), used to entertain small children on the knee of a grandparent. A version of the tune was used for a song called "He came from the north" AKA "The man of the north countrie", written by Thomas D'Arcy McGee, born in Carlingford, Co. Louth, in 1825. According to Alfred Moffat (1897), he was an ardent member of the Young Ireland party, but later became disillusioned and changed his political views drastically. This turn was seen a traitorous by the Fenians, and McGee was assassinated on the street in Ottawa, Canada, in 1868.
