DESPAIRING LOVER, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Barnes dates the tune to 1711. As a song air it appears in Clio and Euterpe, or British Harmony, vol 2 (London, 1759, p. 59). The lyric begins:

In Chloes frowns I read my fate
