DEVIL AMONG THE TAILORS [5]. Irish, Reel (cut time). A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The reel "Devil among the Tailors [5]" is contained in the music manuscript collection of biography:Rev. Luke Donnellan (1878-1952), Oriel region, south Ulster[1]. It is not related to other tunes of that name, however, in the original ms. the title "Maid on the Strand" appears with the tune, crossed out, and "Devil among the Tailors" substituted.

Researcher Conor Ward also finds a cognate melody in the Scottish "Captain Campbell of Carphen" (albeit with parts reversed).

  1. Donnellan researcher Gerry O'Connor came to believe the ms. is not the work of the curate but rather was originally compiled by an unknown but able fiddler over the course of a playing lifetime, probably in the late 19th century. The ms. later came into the possession of Donnellan, who was also a fiddler.
