EAST BOURNE REEL, THE. English, Hornpipe (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "East Bourne Reel" is a dotted time reel or hornpipe contained in a small volume of original tunes entitled A Collection of Country Dances and Waltzes (c. 1797), issued anonymously by "A Young Lady". However, according to a Ms. note on the Royal Academy of Music Library copy, the composer was a Miss Newberry. Since many of the titles are named for Sussex and its locales, it can be assumed Miss Newberry was a resident of the county. The title refers a one of four hamlets extent in Miss Newberry's day. Bourne (or, to distinguish it from others of the same name, East Bourne), is now known as Old Town, and this surrounded the bourne (stream) which rises in the present Motcombe Park; Meads, where the Downs meet the coast, South Bourne; and the fishing settlement known simply as Sea Houses. The area was developed in the Victorian era as a fashionable seaside resort.
