FAIRIES MARCH. English, March (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A march found in the large 1840 music manuscript collection of multi-instrumentalist John Rook, of Waverton, near Wigton, Cumbria. Rook's notation is good, but not always accurate. The "c'" notes in the 1st measure, 2nd strain of his "Fairies March" are clearly noted as such in the ms., but 'b' notes make more musical sense. Upon the substitution of 'b' notes, the first few measures of the 2nd strain do strongly remind of Nathaniel Gow's well-known "Fairy Dance."
