FAITHFUL FRIEND, THE (An Caraid Tairiseac). Irish, Hornpipe. D Mixolydian (O'Neill/Krassen): D Major (O'Neill/1850). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC.

Source for notated version: Chicago fiddler Edward Cronin, originally from County Tipperary, also a weaver, machinist and composer [O'Neill]. Cronin was an exceptional fiddler with a wealth of tunes, and O'Neill transcribed a number of them in regular visits to his house. However, Cronin could also be suspicious and boasted that he 'never forgot and never forgave' a slight. The transcribing sessions stopped when he perceived some transgression or another on O'Neill part, and they never resumed.

Printed sources: O'Neill (Krassen), 1976; p. 213. O'Neill (Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies), 1903; No. 1763, p. 328.
