FARNELL'S GROUND. English, Air. The melody appears in both Henry Atkinson's 1694 violin manuscript (Northumberland), and the Balcarres lute manuscript. ). A 'ground' is a repeated bass line and meant that is meant to underpin various elaborations in the treble by a violin in “divisions” or series of variations, in order to show technical expertise of a solo player. It is not a country dance tune.
