FAVORITE POLKA [1]. AKA and see "St. Pamphile Reel." Canadian, Polka (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Canadian radio and TV fiddler Don Messer and his band recorded the polka for Apex Records in 1942. It is listed as "Traditional" in his Anthology (1980). Peter Corfield (2024) also finds a version recorded by Montreal fiddler Jean Carignan as the second tune of a set entitled "Reel de Lévis," consisting of tunes Carignan's father played. Jerry Holland also recorded a version of the tune, although his setting differs somewhat from Messer's.
The alternate title, "St. Pamphile Reel," takes its name from the community of Saint Pamphile, Québec, directly on the border with the state of Maine.
