FIDEL MARTIN'S GYPSY REEL.   Canadian, American?; Reel.  G Major ('A' part) & D Major ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB.  Fidel Martin (1891-1976) was originally from Rogersville, New Brunswick, where he learned to fiddle.  As a young man he moved to Maine and then to Berlin, N.H., where he worked in the paper mills and as a truck driver for the city.  His repertoire was large and varied and included tunes from Canada, the United States, Ireland and Scotland.  He was friends with the musical Riendeau family of Berlin and Gerry Gobichaud, also New Brunswick expats.  Peter Corfield (2024) identifies the tune as "Irish" without further comment, but the tune lacks 'Irish character'.  Furthermore, Irish tunes seldom changed keys, quadrille-like, between parts.  The second strain sounds faintly like an adaptation of "Yellow Rose of Texas."
