The tune was in the repertory of Scioto County, southern Ohio, fiddler Jimmy Wheeler (1917-1987) as "Fire in the Log," although Wheeler also announced it also had alternate titles "Possum up the Gum Stump (5)" and "Who Shit in Grandpa's Hat." The Quebecois tune "Noces à Lise (Les)" has a cognate first strain, but the second strains differ.
