FIRE IN THE MOUNTAIN [3]. American, Dance Tune (4/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Samuel Bayard (1943) is of the opinion that his Pennsylvania collected version bears a slight resemblance to the well-known "Shortnin' Bread," and points out that the title has apparently been a floating one for some time, noting its inclusion in Joyce's Irish collection (where the title is applied to a jig). "With the first part of "Fire on the Mountain," compare the melody of 'Organ Grinder Swing'" (Bayard).
