FRANK BARBEE HORNPIPE. American, Reel (cut time). D Mixolydian/Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. A mixed-mode Appalachian masterpiece that switches between mixolydian and dorian as the 'F' and 'c' notes are played variously sharp or natural, intertwining. The tune was untitled, but was called on the record label "Frank Barbee Hornpipe" after its source, fiddler Eldia Barbee's father. There are at least two different field recordings of Mr. Barbee playing the tune, recorded in the latter 1970's by musician and collector Ron Williams.
