GALLIARD, LA. English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). E Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. While there are many tunes by this title, this particular melody appears to be unique to Samuel, Ann and Peter Thompson's Compleat Collection, vol. 5 (London, 1788). The galliard [1] was a Renaissance dance that was extremely popular in the 16th century in Europe. The musical form, with its distinctive six beats to the phrase, outlived the dance itself.
