GEM POLKA. American, Polka (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABACCDDA. The "Gem Polka" was composed in 1852 by Philadelphia musician, music teacher and composer James W. Porter [1], dedicated "to his friend, William B. Turner." Porter regularly turned out popular songs and instrumental pieces during the mid-19th century. The tune was copied into the 1859 music manuscript collection of musician M.E. Eames, who was perhaps from Philadelphia as well.
