GRANNY WILL YOUR DOG BITE? [6]. American, Reel (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The source for this version of "Granny will Your Dog Bite?" is northeastern Kentucky fiddler Kelly Gilbert (1895-1991). The tune is barely recognizable in the first strain as the more familiar "Granny will...", and even then the resemblance is more rhythmic than melodic, with the "dog bite, dog bite, dog bite" repetition the main unifying characteristic. Collectors Guthrie Meade and John Harrod, who made field recordings of Gilbert in the 1970's, paint him as a rather taciturn man, reluctant to elaborate on his music but not unwilling, and a fiddler with amazing endurance at an elderly age, enjoying being able to play tune after tune.
