GRONDEUSE À AZELLUS, LA. French-Canadian, Reel (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune is a 'grondeuse' (growling melody) from the repertoire of fiddler Azellus Cantin, who was the uncle of the late Gilles Cantin, a member of La Bottine Souriante. Both Cantin men were members of La Famille Cantin, who hailed from Saint-Liguori, north of Montreal. Fiddler and researcher Lisa Ornstein recorded Azellus in 1979. The term grondeuse also describes a category of tunes in Quebec characterized by the fiddle tuned ADae and a low, or 'growling' sounding strain of music.
