HEAVEN RULES THE WAVES, GOOD MEN NEVER WILL BE SLAVES. American, Air (whole time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One Part. "Heaven rules the waves, good men never will be slaves" is contained in Riley's Flute Melodies vol. 1, issued by music publisher Edward Riley in New York in 1814. The title may refer to the War of 1812, one of the causes of which was the impressment of sailors on American merchant vessels at sea by the British Navy, if they were thought to be deserters or British nationals.
