There is a report the tune was derived from the "Turkish March" from Beethoven's The Ruins of Athens Opus 113, a set of incidental music written in 1811 to accompany the play of that name by August von Kotzebue. It was re-published as the popular "Turkish Polka." However, Beethoven's composition does not sound like "Heel and Toe Polka [5]" and further inquiry is needed.
"Heel and Toe Polka [5]" is a version of a piece called "Sultan Polka" by the once-popular light classical composer Charles d'Albert (1809–1886), a German-born British dance master and composer. It was one of his most popular works. A version of the English melody was entered into the c. 1890 music manuscript copybook of East Anglia musician George H. Watson.
