HEY FOR HONESTY. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody is unique to London publisher Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1765 country dance collection. Dance figures for "Neighbor downright, or, Hey for Honesty" were printed by Walsh in his Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1763 (London). Hey for honesty, down with knavery is the name of a play by Thomas Randolph (1605-1635), an adaptation of Aristophanes' Plutus, a version of which was published by Francis Jacques in 1651. What, if any, connection the tune has with the play is unknown.
