HOLY EVEN. Scottish, Dance Air (cut time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Holy Even is All Hallow's Eve, Oct. 31, or Halloween; the evening prior to All Saints Day. This melody, identified in the publication as a 'Scotch measure', appears in Henry Playford's Collection of Original Scotch-Tunes (full of the Highland Humours) for the Violin: Being the first of its kind yet Printed: Most of them being in the compass of the Flute [1] (London, 1700, p. 16). Henry was the second son of John Playford, scion of the family publishing concern at Temple-Change, Fleet Street (an elder son, also John, was a music-seller as well).
