I LIKE A SHIP IN STORMS WAS TOST. AKA and see "Thomas I Cannot," "Thomas You Cannot," "My Mither Says I Mauna." The air appears under this title in John Gay's Beggar's Opera (1729). Frank Kidson (1922) identifies this as an early tune found in collections for the virginal; it also appears in Playford's Dancing Master of 1670.
