Northumbrian musician William Vickers included the tune as "Love for Ever (1)" in hin 1770 music manuscript collection.

Source for notated version : - a c. 1847 music manuscript by Ellis Knowles, a musician from Radcliffe, Lancashire, England [Doyle]. Fr John Quinn notes some similarity between the second strain of "Irish Girl [4]" and the air "Páidín Mhac Ruairidhe", although they are not the same tune.
