IS THEN HIS FATE DECREED, SIR? AKA and see "Of a noble race was Shenkin." The air appears under this title in John Gay's Beggar's Opera, 1729. Kison (1922) says that although the tune has been claimed as Welsh, the music was either by Henry Purcell or John Eccles, as it appears in Thomas D'Urfey's play The Richmond Heiress to which they wrote the music in 1693. It also appears in D'Urfey's Pills to Purge Melancholy, vols. II and IV.
