Back to It Thundered in the East[edit]

IT THUNDERED IN THE EAST. American, Reel. USA, southwestern Pa. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The tune is similar to minstrel Dan Emmett's "Jordan Is a Hard Road to Travel" ("Kingdom Coming", "Year of Jubilo"); Bayard (1981) thinks it likely they may both have been derived from some common ancestor.

The ditty below was recited by Bayard's source:

It thundered in the East,
And it thundered in the West,
And it thundered in the Allegheny Mountains. (Bayard)

Source for notated version: Thomas Patterson (Elizabeth, Pa., 1930's) [Bayard].

Printed sources: Bayard (Dance to the Fiddle), 1981; No. 89, p. 54.
